Yes, NBA 2K22 is the latest in the popular annual sports title and returns with a fully-fledged current-generation experience while also catering to the previous-gen consumers with a solid offering all around. Unfortunately, the series’ latest entry does miss a few jump shots on its way to the big leagues while making some welcomed changes simultaneously.

NBA 2K22 has devoted much of its development to address last year’s more notable flaws. The result is a game that feels familiar, yet fresh in all the right ways. Rather than just being standard across the board based on stats, the new shot meter has a dynamically resizing make window that expands when you’re taking quality shots with good shooters, while greatly reducing when taking bad shots, shooting when low on stamina, or are just using a poor shooter.

MyNBA allows players to take control of a team and run the day-to-day operations, or just play through all the games in a season, of which you can determine the length. It adds complexities to the idea of being an NBA exec that goes deeper than just hiring a staff, drafting or signing players, and negotiating contracts.

One place NBA 2K22 does not skimp on is its expanded City mode which now incorporates the much loved MyCareer mode. The story element is copy/paste from a number of sport clichés where you take on a rookie player and attempt to take him from the lower leagues to the very top of the NBA. Doing so will require a lot of grinding and hard work (and microtransactions – ugh).

Taking over an entire NBA franchise with the MyNBA mode now allows you to choose and assign coaching and front office staff to better suit the needs and goals of your team, which I found never affected the court on such a meaningful level. The W allows you to experience a career through the ranks of the WNBA, but feels incredibly bare bones compared to the main MyCareer, stripping any personality that The City had and confining such goals and strategies to basic menus.

NBA 2K22 is a great game in pretty much every other facet, which helps to overshadow the VC issues that have been present for years now. Combining MyCareer with The City was a genius decision and the introduction of Seasons across multiple game modes will keep NBA 2K22 fresh moving forward throughout the next year while waiting on the next annual entry.
