Madden is a game built on three pillars these days: Franchise, Ultimate Team, and Longshot. Longshot was first introduced in Madden NFL 18. Madden 19 continues the story mode with Longshot: Homecoming to present the next events in the lives of former high school teammates Colt Cruise and Devin Wade as they hold onto their dreams of playing in the NFL. Unfortunately, the story sequel this year in Madden NFL 19 didn’t seem to be very satisfying.

The basic about Longshot in Madden series

For beginners, Longshot can serve as a tutorial. Comparing with Skills Trainer, Longshot is more of a crash-course in the game's control scheme in a variety of controlled situations. Some parts of Longshot can be failed and the story will move on anyway. Other gameplay parts require success and you'll be prompted to try again, which will be denoted in the walkthrough. Although rewards don't seem to differ no matter how well you do, you will be rewarded with strong cards for Madden Ultimate Team, if you complete challenges successfully. Besides, Longshot doesn't take too long to complete. So you better have a try at it.

Madden NFL 19 Longshot review

As with the story mode in Madden NFL 19, although it does away with the run of tedious mini-games, it still seems to be a disaster in every other ways, with the endless tropes, nonsensical plot points, character arcs that make no sense, and many plot holes in the story.

For starters, it seems like every character is obsessed with teaching lessons. It's fair to say upwards of 80-90% of all the cutscenes involve any two or more characters speaking in ways that are so unrealistic. Protagonist Devin Wade is constantly on the receiving end of older, wiser, men telling him how it was in their day, how he is out of line and so on. Making it worse, he doesn't even appear to be a bad player, either on or off the field. He's constantly being reprimanded for transgressions that are inapparent. What makes it worse is the story jumps from Devin to his best friend Colt Cruise about halfway through in a way that is so jarring, neither character's story feels close to satisfying. For example,Just as Devin is signed by the Texans off of the Cowboys practice squad, the game cuts to focusing entirely on Colt's life as he struggles to get a foot in the NFL's door. Eventually he's signed by the Dolphins, only to appear soon thereafter coaching his high school team after his former coach dies of a heart attack in his team office. Towards the end, he was cut the Dolphins. However, that's never communicated sooner than in passing at the very end. That means one minute he's earned a spot on an NFL team, and the very next scene he's agreeing to coach his team for the next three years. Aside from this, there are other pacing problems and apparent plot holes at the beginning of the story.

In a world, the story has enough plot points for a full season of a TV series and we hope that the team behind Madden can rethink how they approach the story mode going forward seriously if they continue another story mode in the Madden series next year.
