Does NBA 2K17 still stand its ground
2016-03-21 09:41:53
It seems safe to say, most people really like NBA 2K17. According to Metacritic, the conglomerate score for the game is an impressive 86. That's before major publications such as IGN North America. You can't totally predict what any reviewer will say about a game, but with Tuesday being the official release in stores - and with many already enjoying many of the aspects of the game from Friday's Early Tip-Off Edition - it would be surprising to see a series of low grades bring NBA 2K17's score down.
Players have no control over the off-the-court interactions during the three-year period scripted by Lee: The superstar’s final year in high school, first year in college and rookie season in the NBA. Good and bad things happen during the story, which is decent despite being riddled with cliches about your player’s rise from the ghetto to super-stardom, but we can’t do anything about it. You’re a product of the Harlem projects and two loving parents, a fantastic student, and a basketball prodigy.
As before, the best mode for play with an entire team would be MyGM, in which you control everything from team roster, the way the budget can be allocated, and the action on the court. Each team’s owner will have different goals for you to achieve with the squad, be it making the play-offs or winning the championship. You’ll field press conferences too with the answers given affecting how the team see you, and how the media views you. The fluidity in play is second to none, meaning every single move links seamlessly with the next and results in not a single stutter or crash.
You’ll feel like a million dollars when you dribble with a bit of style that takes you behind the defense and en route to the basket with a holier-than-thou dunk. Likewise, blocking a player’s shot gives you great satisfaction; it is so easy to get caught up in the action due to the realism in Visual Concepts dedication to precise, enjoyable gameplay. "NBA 2K17’s" career mode is one of the best career modes in sports video games - you just have to make it through the first season.
Another new feature is the addition of creating your own arena, logo and uniform. While you can still collect cards that allow you to use NBA jerseys, arenas and logos, you can now make your own identity. MyCareer stumbles through those first six hours, but thankfully things even out again and the NBA 2K’s series tight gameplay finally shines through. I love the addition of the bounce pass (a quick tap of B/Circle and directional towards player) because it gives me more control of the ball when attempting a risky pass through traffic or to a rolling player off a screen.
With continual debates over who reigns as the top dog in basketball sims, there’s a divide. Okay, maybe not a divide, but there are a handful of people who doubt NBA 2K’s mighty allure. With every passing season fans wait anxiously for that yearly upgrade, and to this point 2K has stayed consistent in every way. It certainly looks as if the only one to stand in the way of NBA 2K’s greatness is itself. But with NBA Live attempting to make a comeback, the question remains: Will NBA 2K17 stand its ground?
Speaking of set plays, the 2K franchise has long been known for having the most in-depth plays and realistic team playbooks. You’ll see the Miami Heat running a lot of action involving the 5 at the top of the key swinging to a guard and following up with an on-ball screen, and you’ll see the San Antonio Spurs involving the action on the weak-side to open up a corner three.
